- Software tools for constructing hypertext systems
- =================================================
-
- Over the last six months, we've built several large commercial hypertext
- systems. These systems are close to 1,000 files each, having perhaps 2,000
- embedded links, and the same number of network nodes.
-
- In database terms, these are relatively small systems. But with hypertext,
- expert systems, or general programs, organizing information using 5,000 elements
- into decision trees (or if statements) is a large system.
-
- However, the entire literature of hypertext -- articles, books, and
- existing products <FILE74> -- makes absolutely no mention of the type of
- tools we use to rapidly build hypertext systems.
-
- From our viewpoint, hypertext is more than a pretty screen. At the core, it's
- categorizing and classifying information in order to serve the needs of users.
- Tools for categorizing and classifying are central to hypertext.
-
- Without such tools for creating, organizing, and managing link information,
- the construction of hypertext frames (i.e., nodes, files, structures,
- screens, pages) is haphazard. At best, the build-a-screen-then-link-it
- approach leads to spaghetti hypertext, providing users with wandering,
- where-am-I experience. <FILE28 HYPERTEXT> Lost-in-the-labyrinth
- hypertext simply reflects poor management of the contained information.
- <FILE62 VALUE>
-
- However, the hypertext surprise is that only PC-Hypertext provides tools for
- building structured hypertext. Why only us? Haven't others built large
- systems?
-
- From our own experience <FILE53 EXPERIENCE>, here are the various
- processes and software we use to build effective hypertext systems <FILE30>:

- We've assembled our hypertext construction tools into a package called
- HYPERLINK, which is available from MaxThink for $89. From our experience,
- you can build very effective hypertext systems in minimum time with these five
- recommended software tools:
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
